The Lightning Pay Wallet Beta: Faster, Simpler, and More Reliable

New Wallet Beta 2

We're excited to introduce the updated beta version of the Lightnign Pay Wallet. Purpose‑built for speed, reliability, and seamless self‑custody.

This release changes the entire backend, replacing the Liquid model of custody with the new Spark nodeless SDK from Breez. This provides a major upgrade to Lightning performance while keeping on‑chain compatibility smooth and dependable.

If you already use our wallet, this update is designed to feel familiar while delivering a noticeable lift in performance. It maintains the spirit of the original wallet, with instant buy/sell directly through Lightning Pay straight to self‑custody, while introducing the foundation for a far more robust experience.

What's New

Faster Lightning Transactions

We've rebuilt the wallet backend to instantly improve payment reliability and dramatically reduces delays.

More Reliable Lightning Addresses

In the old app beta, Lightning addresses could fail if a user hadn’t opened the wallet recently — they depended on background notifications that didn’t always arrive. That’s gone.

The new version keeps your Lightning address responsive 24/7, without relying on app wake-ups or notification quirks. If someone sends you sats, it arrives.

This means you should be far less likely to have to claim your daily DCA manually, and just have it in your wallet the next time you take a look!

Cleaner, Simpler UX

The wallet flows have been streamlined. Checking balances, sending, receiving, and buying or selling Bitcoin now take fewer steps. It’s lighter, clearer, and designed for both everyday use and Bitcoin newcomers.

Integrated Exchange — Still Self‑Custodial

Just like before, you can buy and sell Bitcoin directly through Lightning Pay, with funds settling instantly into your self‑custodied wallet. No third-party exchanges. No custodial accounts.

Migration Instructions

Upgrading to the new version will require migration, but we've made sure you won't leave your sats behind. The wallet beta includes simple in‑app migration that moves your funds from the old wallet format to the new one.

Just follow the prompts and you’ll be fully migrated in moments. If you don’t have any existing funds, you can skip this.

If you prefer not to migrate right away or need to move sats elsewhere, the "Legacy Wallet & Transactions" section is still available in Settings. There you can view your old balance and withdraw it to another wallet if needed.

Decommissioning of Old Lightning Addresses

As part of the upgrade, older LNG.NZ Lightning addresses will eventually be retired. Once decommissioned, they will stop functioning.

Please update any place where your old address is used:

  • Dollar‑cost averaging setups

  • Exchange withdrawal or deposit settings

  • Invoices, payment links, business uses

  • Any recurring Bitcoin payment tools

The Legacy Wallet section can help you identify older addresses and export the details if needed.

Closing / What's Next

This update represents a major step forward for our wallet, taking us one step closer to making it easier to save in bitcoin, and easier to use it in the world.

This is still a beta, and we’ll be rolling out more features soon. But right out of the gate, the experience should feel smoother, faster, and more trustworthy.

Stay tuned for the full public release announcement — and thanks for helping us build the best Bitcoin wallet experience in Aotearoa.
